Leonardo da Vinci project
ENSA application for the development of European Network for Sustainable Agriculture Education. Last November 2002 WTC filed a new project application with the European Leonardo da Vinci programme for the development of a level-3 curriculum for organic/biodynamic education. After the Christmas holidays a letter was received from the Ministry of Education (OC&W) in the Netherlands saying that the presented pre-proposal was not invited to be developed in a full proposal, BUT that the partnership was encouraged to work the pilot project application into a transnational network (full-) proposal. Because this suggestion coincides very well with our long term idea of setting up a foundation and network for Sustainable Agriculture (SA) -education throughout Europe our immediate response was positive. After contacts with some of the initial partners and discussion with the Dutch Leonardo da Vinci Agency on January 24 we come to the following project concept.
G o a l s Dissemination of (previous and present) project outcomes and experience in organic agriculture education and providing support to setting up sustainable agriculture education wherever needed (curriculum development, teachers training, qualification and accreditation, etc.). This requires the direct establishment of a website, publications and quarterly E-zines, information magazines over the internet. Collecting and exchange of education materials between partners, assessment of these materials, updating content of training programmes and modules that are already available and the development of a level-3 curriculum (that at present not exists) Development of Personal Experience Portfolio as qualification structure (initially for a level 3 education programme) in organic and biodynamic agriculture. This innovative development complies with the changes in vocation education directing at acquiring competences rather then accumulating knowledge. Eventually we will need to develop the same qualification structure for level 2 and 4 as well. Providing a (single and standard) accreditation reference for organic and biodynamic agriculture education throughout Europe. In many countries schools and colleges have difficulty to offer sustainable agriculture education because the funding is depending on the accreditation of the institute. By offering a standard curriculum with qualification structure we intend to assist these institutes with accreditation and therefore opening the possibility to offer sustainable agriculture education to the general public. Structure of the project. The planned structure in the project is that we will need three groups of partners: Core-partners: those partners of SA-IVT 2000 and ESA4 that can contribute to the above mentioned goals immediately and independently. SA-IVT 2000 is a Warmonderhof Training Centre project developing a curriculum for level-2, ESA4 is a project of Emerson College (UK) that is developing the level-4 education programme. These core partners will be: Warmonderhof Training Centre, Emerson College (UK), Pershore Group of Colleges (UK), Landwijzer vzw (B), Rengoldshausen (D), Skillebyholm (S), Snelmann Institute (FIN), Beirambiente (PT). They are all involved in at least 1 of the running projects. Associated partners: Transnational or at least National (umbrella) organisations of organic/ biodynamic farmers (for general and topical support to the network, monitoring the education output of the network and establishing the multiplayer quality with the project partnership). At present we have contacts to this end with IFOAM, Naturwissenschaftliche Sektion Dornach, Forschungsring, Soil Association, Demeterforbundet, Association of Latvian Organic Agriculture Organisations, Biodynamic Agriculture Association (UK) and other national organisations of organic/biodynamic farmers. Dissemination partners: schools, colleges and institutions that are interested in the development of the network and possibly are interested to develop and deliver organic/biodynamic agriculture education in the near future.
Main activities A very important element of the Transnational Network project is Dissemination. For this we are planning: Presentations at (international) conferences by all partners whenever possible. Production of a general information CD-ROM for handing out to interested parties. (This should contain the general build-up of the available curricula and example 1 module (matrix + handbook). Establish a Foundation The core partners have agreed to the general idea. Details will be worked out during the project, but this will become the driving force that will maintain the network also after the project has finished. Core-partners in this project have agreed to contribute annually in order to maintain the network and the communications between the partners after the end of the project. The number of partners in the network is expected to increase over the years. Organizing a conference for the presentation of the network and foundation in the last year of the project (2006).
